Without a club since leaving Italy, defender Mitchel Bakker faces a defining moment to reignite his career. The former Paris Saint-Germain player must now prove himself on the pitch to regain match fitness.
A Training Camp In Spain To Earn A Contract With NEC Nijmegen
NEC Nijmegen officially confirmed on Monday, September 28, 2026, that Mitchel Bakker is on trial with the squad. The 26-year-old left-back is taking part in a six-day training camp with the team in Estepona, Spain. The training sessions are held at the Banús Football Center.
This week under head coach Dick Schreuder represents a major opportunity for the defender. As the Dutch side sits in 11th place in the Eredivisie, the full-back aims to earn a contract through the end of the season.
From Starting For PSG To Injury Struggles With Atalanta
After joining Paris Saint-Germain, where he featured from 2019 to 2021, Mitchel Bakker went on to sign for Bayer Leverkusen. He subsequently moved to Atalanta BC before spending the 2024-2025 campaign on loan at LOSC Lille.
Sidelined by a severe ACL tear, the Dutch defender managed only 8 minutes of action last season against Bologna. Now a free agent following the termination of his contract in Italy, he faces a major battle to prove his fitness and get his career back on track.
