With FC Barcelona stalling in negotiations according to Fabrizio Romano, Atlético de Madrid forward Julián Álvarez is once again turning heads across Europe. Paris Saint-Germain could look to capitalize on this twist to revive a major transfer target ahead of the upcoming fixtures of the campaign.
Why FC Barcelona Dropped Their Pursuit Of Julián Álvarez
Catalan sporting director Deco spoke on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at the Portugal Football Summit in Oeiras. He confirmed that the Julián Álvarez track belongs in the past. Following the summer setback and the free transfer of Robert Lewandowski to the Chicago Fire, the club signed Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal.
The FC Barcelona board considers their attack well balanced thanks to the performances of Raphinha. The Blaugrana hierarchy is also monitoring young prospect Estêvão at Chelsea without making a concrete offer. This decision leaves the competitive landscape wide open on the market.
Difficult Start At Atlético Reignites Parisian Interest
On the pitch, the 26-year-old Argentina international is enduring a mixed start to the campaign with Club Atlético de Madrid. Goalless in 4 appearances, Julián Álvarez missed 2 matches in September 2026 due to illness and muscle overload.
This complicated situation fuels discussions at Paris Saint-Germain, who are actively monitoring the World Cup winner. Having already signed Ferran Torres for €48.5 million, the Parisian club is still looking to fine-tune its European attack.
Major Financial Hurdles Stand In The Way Of A Winter Move For The Argentine Forward
A deal remains difficult against the Madrid board. According to Club Atlético de Madrid, any approach points directly to his €500 million release clause.
The Paris Saint-Germain hierarchy must therefore show restraint ahead of the upcoming winter transfer window. Even if the Barcelona withdrawal provides a clear strategic advantage, Paris will avoid any reckless mid-season investment, prioritizing squad harmony before hosting FC Barcelona on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at the Parc des Princes in the Champions League.
Should Paris Saint-Germain try to sign Julián Álvarez as early as this winter?
